Our Work and Programs

Education and Prevention:

Our Positive Living Curriculum was written with the infected persons physical and mental health in mind. The curriculum was funded in part by a grant from the Federal Center for Disease Control and written in San Diego by Carolyn Hunt and Dennis Dunn (Dennis is the NAP Executive Director).

Carolyn directed the Primary Prevention for Positives (P3) Program in Tucson, AZ. Dennis co-authored the curriculum while volunteering at the LGBT Center, for Carolyn, as part of the steering committee project. The curriculum is written with the P3 population in mind, but can be adapted to other cultures and target populations.

The Positive Living course is an eight week course of one per week two hour classes for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

The curriculum includes the following topics:

  • Assertiveness
  • Breathing
  • Toxins
  • Water
  • HIV Knowledge & Involvement
  • Crisis Coping
  • Stress
  • Self-Care When Sick
  • Sexual Health
  • Doctor Relationship
  • Communication Skills
  • Depression
  • Sleep
  • Loss / Grief
  • Non-Sexual Infections (Germs)
  • Balanced Living

Advocacy:

Nevada AIDS Project assists clients through the continuum of care in Nevada. Clients in our state, and those considering moving here, are guided to appropriate providers who offer services to the HIV/AIDS community. Such services include, but are not limited to:

  • Housing

  • Transportation

  • Medical Care

  • AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP)

  • Food

  • Emergency Assistance

  • Testing and Counseling

We assist clients in finding the full range of community services at all levels. If you need assistance, or more information about our services, please visit our Contact page and call or drop us a line.

We are also working with the Las Vegas Ryan White Council to achieve funding for an Ombudsman who can help clients enter the continuum of care, refer clients to local agencies, and intercede between agencies and clients when access is difficult or denied. The hope is that we can keep more clients in care in a community that is now 70% out of care according to Southern Nevada Health Department statistics.

Research:

NAP is involved in several ways in promoting HIV/AIDS research in Clark County. For instance, our Executive Director sits, as a community member, on the Institutional Review Board of the University of Nevada Medical Center for drug protocols in Southern Nevada.

We connect qualified individuals with anti-viral research studies in Denver, Los Angles, San Diego and San Francisco until our work to bring such studies here to the Valley bears fruit.

We are also pursuing bringing more Doctors and Clinics who work with HIV to the Las Vegas area, and working toward an HIV dedicated clinic for our area.

Comfort:

Our Suite Charity showroom provides no-cost or low-cost furnishings and accessories to clients in need. Please see our Showroom page for more information.
